PhD Level: Daily Curated Tech News for Entrepreneurs, by Entrepreneurs
Dear reader,
Arc Institute continues to make breakthroughs in the field of biotech. It is undoubtedly one of the leading institutes in bringing AI and scientific research together. This week, they released STATE, a prediction model at a cellular level.
Let’s get into it →
Arc Unveils STATE: AI Predicts Cell Responses to Perturbations
Arc Institute has released STATE, a groundbreaking “virtual cell” AI model capable of predicting how human cells—from stem to immune to cancer types—respond at the transcriptomic level to drugs, genetic edits, or cytokines.
STATE is trained on an enormous dataset covering ~170 million observational cells and 100+ million perturbed cells across 70 cell lines.
Using a transformer-based architecture with two modules—State Embedding (SE) and State Transition (ST)—it outperforms existing tools, achieving about 50% better perturbation effect detection and twice the accuracy in finding differentially expressed genes.
My take: STATE is a milestone in computational biology: it’s the first AI to map how millions of cells change in response to interventions with high accuracy. This could turbocharge everything from early drug screening to precision medicine—unleashing a new era where we can experiment on virtual cells before moving to the lab.
Takeaways
Why It Matters
AI-driven drug research: Enables virtual testing of cellular responses before lab experiments, accelerating drug discovery and reducing failure rates.
Scalable biology: Trained on more single-cell perturbation data than any prior model, making it a strong foundation for future biology-focused AI.
Next step in virtual cells: Mirrors breakthroughs seen in protein folding (like AlphaFold), with potential to transform biomedical workflows through “in silico” experimentation.
